What are the odds of becoming a professional tennis player?

Bubba J asked:

I LOVE playing tennis. If I could, I world live at the courts. I play for my high school team, and I’m just about to sophomore year and already playing number 3. If I could, I might want it to be what i do for a living. What do the people of yahoo think the odds are of that happening.

Very slim at your age, the pro’s are starting to participate in kiddie matches at 4 years old…you are already in H.S.!!! The odds of you being an actor are greater, there are so few tennis players in the world, but more parts in movies…and those odds are next to nothing, so think about it….

It depends how much effort you will put into it, and if you believe in yourself or not.
Hold an image of the life you want,
and that image will become fact.

Just the love of the game is not enough….players like Chris Everett, John McEnroe had parents who invested tons of money into their training. Not to discourage you, but it takes bucks and the best coaches. Guess you could go pro, but winning the big one will take the scratch.

The only limit is your dedication. If your heart isn’t with it 100% I’m afraid there is a 0% chance you will achieve that goal.

Most professional players were actually turning professional at your age (or were at the capacity to) so you are a bit of a late bloomer.

To be honest if this is your true aspiration high school tennis teams will only hold you back. If you are serious about this goal it would require you to hire a professional coach to work with you everyday, travel extensively to junior competitions and essentially eat, sleep and breath tennis. To me that sounds like the Life! Unfortunately I could never afford the coach and travel/tournament expenses.

If you began within the next half year and seriously worked everyday there is a possibility that in the next 5 years you could consider making it a career (I’m assuming you have some natural talent and your high school team is competitive at LEAST in the regional tournaments).
