is professional tennis player paying the bills?
Eric C asked:
i am curious how much money pro player makes?
other than the glamours top players getting all the endorsments and commercials, etc., can a pro player, say #100 make a decent living?
i understand most players have to take care of their traveling expenses, equipments, lodging, etc. so where is the “break even ranking” if you will, to pay the bills as a pro player?
if the tournament prize money is the only source of income, i say it is a BAD career choice! i don’t think you can live on the money if you are not the top 50 players…

If the player doesn’t come from a rich family (the Williams sisters certainly weren’t, originally!), then he/she has to rely on sponsors, which could be the local barber and/or car dealership and/or the “kindness of strangers”. For example, during juniors, college, or satellite events – - and even pro events – - some people open their homes to lower-ranked players who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford hotels, cars, restaurants, etc. I know people who have done so, and it has been a great experience for all concerned, especially when the players come from different countries. So, the “break even” point depends on the player and his/her situation. If a player is good, then he/she will pick-up more and more sponsors along their career; if not, then he/she will just have to make do or give up. It’s much the same as for any other job!
